NYC Pest Control FAQ

Straight answers on compliance, treatment, cost, and what to expect — from a company that’s been operating in NYC since 1970.

Restaurant & Food Service

How do I get rid of cockroaches in my NYC restaurant?

Restaurant cockroach elimination requires a multi-step Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach: inspection to identify harborage zones, exclusion to seal entry points, gel bait application in cracks and crevices, and follow-up monitoring. A single spray treatment rarely produces lasting results. Broadway Pest Services uses IPM protocols that comply with NYC Health Department requirements and HACCP food safety standards. What happens if my NYC restaurant fails a DOH inspection for pests?

A failed DOH pest inspection results in violation points added to your Health Department grade. Accumulating 28 or more points in a single inspection cycle triggers a B or C grade, which must be posted publicly and significantly impacts customer traffic. Severe infestations can result in closure orders. Broadway Pest Services provides same-day emergency response and treatment documentation to support re-inspection compliance. See our compliance guide →

Are the pesticides you use safe for food service environments?

Yes. We use only EPA-registered products specifically approved for food service and food handling areas. All products and application methods comply with HACCP and FSMA food safety standards. We apply gel baits in enclosed cracks and crevices — not open sprays — and schedule treatments to minimize operational disruption. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are provided for every product used on your premises.
Property Management & HPD

What is an HPD pest violation and how do I clear it?

An HPD pest violation is a formal notice from NYC Housing Preservation and Development that pests were observed in a residential building. Class B violations require correction within 30 days. Class C (immediately hazardous) violations must be corrected within 24 hours. To clear an HPD violation, you must address the pest condition, document treatment, and certify correction through the HPD Online portal. Broadway Pest Services provides violation-specific treatment plans and the written documentation required to certify correction. Full HPD compliance guide →

What does Local Law 55 require for pest control in NYC?

Local Law 55 of 2018 requires NYC building owners to use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices rather than routine pesticide application. IPM emphasizes prevention, monitoring, and non-chemical controls first. Owners must respond to pest complaints within a defined timeframe, maintain records of pest conditions and treatments, and use licensed pest control operators. Broadway Pest Services is fully IPM-compliant and maintains all required documentation on your behalf.

Do I need a pest control contract or can I do one-time service?

For regulated NYC businesses — restaurants, hotels, food processing facilities, and multi-family residential buildings — an ongoing service contract is strongly recommended. NYC Health Department and HPD both look favorably on properties with documented, continuous pest management programs during audits and inspections. One-time treatments can resolve acute infestations, but without ongoing monitoring and prevention, re-infestation is common in NYC’s dense urban environment.
Treatment & Service

How long does bed bug treatment take?

A standard chemical bed bug treatment requires 2–3 service visits spaced 2 weeks apart. Heat treatments can resolve an infestation in a single day but require 4–6 hours of preparation by building occupants. Complete elimination typically takes 3–6 weeks depending on infestation severity. Broadway Pest Services provides written service reports after every visit — essential documentation if you need to demonstrate compliance to a property manager, tenant, or housing agency.
