Killing AntsDoesn't KillThe Colony.

Spraying ants you can see eliminates foragers — roughly 10% of the colony. The queen and the remaining 90% are elsewhere, continuing to reproduce. Effective ant control requires slow-acting bait that foragers carry back to the colony and share. Broadway Pest uses the right bait for each species and targets the nest, not just the trail.

Of an ant colony you can't see
Visible foraging ants are just the scouts. The colony — queen, larvae, and workers — is hidden in walls, soil, or wood. Spray treatments kill foragers but leave the colony intact and reproducing.

The Threat

What you're
actually dealing with.

🐜
Carpenter Ants — Structural Risk
Carpenter ants are the most serious ant pest in NYC buildings. They don't eat wood — they excavate it to build nests, causing structural damage over time. Carpenter ants in your walls indicate moisture damage somewhere in the building, since they nest in wet or rotting wood. Finding and fixing the moisture source is as important as eliminating the colony.
🍽
Kitchen Infestations
Odorous house ants and pavement ants are the most common kitchen invaders in NYC apartments and restaurants. They contaminate food preparation surfaces, trigger DOH violations in food service establishments, and are notoriously difficult to control with consumer products because repellent sprays scatter the colony rather than eliminating it.
NYC
Sidewalk Entry in Dense Urban Areas
NYC's dense sidewalks, tree pits, and building foundations create enormous ant colonies directly adjacent to buildings. Entry points at ground level — gaps around pipes, door thresholds, and foundation cracks — are constant pressure points. Perimeter treatment combined with interior bait is the only strategy that works long-term in NYC's urban environment.
Our Protocol

How we
eliminate it.

Every Broadway Pest treatment follows a documented protocol — assessment first, treatment second, follow-up third. No guesswork, no generic spraying.

  • 01
    Species identification first
Carpenter ants, odorous house ants, pavement ants, and pharaoh ants each require different bait formulations and application strategies. Misidentification leads to treatment failure. We identify before we treat.
  • 02
Slow-acting gel bait — not repellent spray
Repellent sprays scatter ant colonies and make them harder to eliminate. Slow-acting gel bait is carried back to the colony and shared with workers and larvae, eventually reaching the queen. This is the only method that eliminates the entire colony.
  • 03
    Nest location and moisture assessment
For carpenter ant infestations, we locate the nest and assess for moisture damage. Carpenter ants near moisture = rot somewhere in the structure. We identify the source and recommend remediation to prevent re-infestation.
  • 04
    Perimeter sealing and barrier treatment
Entry point sealing at ground level combined with exterior perimeter treatment prevents re-infestation from the adjacent outdoor colony population. Interior bait alone is insufficient in NYC's high-pressure urban environment.

Operational Protocol

How we execute.

01
Species ID & trail mapping
Identify ant species and map foraging trails to locate nest entry points and activity zones.
02
Gel bait application
Species-appropriate slow-acting bait applied at foraging sites and entry points — never repellent spray.
03
Nest assessment
For carpenter ants: locate nest, assess moisture source, provide structural remediation recommendations.
04
Perimeter treatment & sealing
Exterior barrier treatment and physical sealing of ground-level entry points to prevent re-entry from outdoor colonies.
Service Journey

What to expect
start to finish.

No guesswork. Here's exactly how our ant program works — what you do before we arrive, what happens during the service visit, and what to expect after we leave.

Phase 01

Before We Arrive

  • Clean food preparation and storage surfaces — ants are following pheromone trails to food sources, so removing the food signals disrupts them
  • Document where you have observed trails or activity, including any outdoor entry points around the foundation
  • Remove standing water sources where possible: pet bowls, drip trays, leaking pipes
  • Do not spray over-the-counter ant spray on trails — this breaks the colony into satellite colonies and makes professional treatment significantly harder
Phase 02

During Service

  • Species identification performed first — carpenter ants require structural inspection, pavement ants require exterior treatment, pharaoh ants require bait-only protocol
  • Bait placed at trail intersections and entry points, calibrated to the species and colony size
  • Exterior perimeter treated at foundation level and around any identified entry points
  • Interior crack-and-crevice treatment at plumbing penetrations, window frames, and baseboard gaps
  • Service documentation created with species identified, bait type, placement locations, and next visit date
Phase 03

After We Leave

  • Critical: do not spray any cleaner, bleach, or insecticide near bait placements — this defeats the treatment
  • Activity may briefly increase in the first 24–48 hours as workers aggressively take bait back to the colony
  • Full die-off typically occurs within 3–7 days as bait reaches the queen
  • Normal operations resume immediately — all products used are food-service safe
  • Follow-up inspection at 2 weeks to confirm colony elimination and re-treat any remaining activity
